THE WORLD

The Brine Reaches

A hard coast of salvage towns and drowned water, from the piers of Saltwind down to the roaring funnel of Gull's Throat — the world of The Drowned Seat.

The Brine Reaches is a working coast. Tar and rot and harbor grease; hulls scavenged off the rocks and sold back to the men who lost them; towns that sit low to the water and take what the tide brings in. Nothing here is ornamental. Everything here is salvage.

It was not always so. Once, the Reaches answered to a single seat — and then a power that rules by erasure drowned it, scattered the line that held it, and scrubbed the memory of it from stone and song. Generations on, the work is nearly done. The old story is a bad-luck song. The drowned capital is a ruin sailors give a wide berth. And the truth of who was unmade has slipped beneath notice, the way the tide takes back a footprint.

The sea gives, and the sea takes, and every ebb leaves its tell.

The Brine Reaches — the coast where The Tell of the Tide unfolds.

Wren Cole
SALVAGE CREW · SALTWIND
Salvager and gambler in Saltwind; the luckiest woman in Saltwind, which is the most dangerous thing she could be. She lives by a simple count — you are worth what you can take, fight for, and outlive — and so far the tally has held. But luck is a debt the tide always collects, and hers is coming due.
Character artwork of Sera Quill
Sera Quill
FIXER · SALTWIND
Wren's oldest friend and the one who knows where every exit is before she sits down. She can get you in, get you out, or get you gone — and she keeps a way clear for herself, always. The scar on her jaw is Wren's. They were eight, and starving, and it was a fight over half a fish.
Character artwork of Corvin Dray
Corvin Dray
THE HUNTER · THE COAST
A patient man in a coat too clean for any harbor he walks into. He carries a mark that quickens when a certain kind of luck runs too hot, and he follows it without hurry and without heat. He does not know her face. He does not need to.
Character artwork of Maren Cole
Maren Cole
CAPTAIN, THE BALLAST CROW · SALTWIND
Master of the Ballast Crow and the closest thing to law Wren has ever answered to. Storm-weathered, broad-handed, and sparing with everything but the work. She counts her crew at every watch — counts them, and counts them again, and knows to a soul that everyone is aboard.
Character artwork of Holt Brace

FIRST MATE, THE BALLAST CROW · SALTWIND
Forty years of rope have gone through his hands, and two fingers with it — taken by a parted hawser the same day it took a man he couldn't haul back. He is the crew's backbone and says almost nothing. When his grip won't hold something, he lifts the short hand off the line, and that is the whole of what he'll tell you.

Caul
SHIP'S BOY, THE BALLAST CROW · SALTWIND
Fourteen, salt-bleached, and forever a few feet higher in the rigging than anyone told him to be. He climbs to prove he's crew and not cargo, and he aches to outgrow the lucky-boy name they hung on him at birth. He is trying very hard to be taken seriously. It is working, slowly.
Character artwork of Lys Marrow
Lys Marrow
THIEF · NO PORT
Half-elf, quick-handed, and wrong in a way you feel before you can name — like a knot tied the wrong way. She belongs to no town and wears the not-belonging like a coat cut for running. She's at your table between one breath and the next, and gone the same way. The irony is real. So is the thing it's covering.
Character artwork of Kestrel Ardent
Kestrel Ardent
RANGER · NO TOWN
Lean and weathered to the color of the ground he tracks across — a man of no town, and it shows. He measures a room once, throat to boots, and misses nothing. His hand rests on his bowstave light as a leaf, and its not-moving is an answer all its own. He has served a cause since he was a boy. It has cost him everything ordinary.
Character artwork of Old Thessaly
Old Thessaly
THE KEEPER · THE STONE CRADLE
Ancient beyond reckoning, root-scarred and stone-grey — a body relearning how to be a body after a sleep longer than the coast's own memory. He wakes slow, with a torn side and hands that shake, into a world that forgot him and a promise he never put down. The legends have him wrong. He is not one of them. He was there.
Character artwork of Phaedra Sill
Phaedra Sill
THE READER · AT THE HUNTER'S SHOULDER
She reads people the way she reads a chart — ink at her cuff, eyes on the object, holding her ground. She is spare, unhurried, and never the loudest thing in a room. She is at her most dangerous when she goes still. Dray hunts. She is the one who understands.
